Shortage of Orlando Apartments Leaves Low Income Locals No Place to Live

A growing concern in Orlando is the consistently decreasing amount of lower income housing. The number of Orlando apartments is decreasing primarily “because home builders compete or urban land with multi-family zoning and because large real estate companies pay top dollars [sic.] for rentals and convert them” into upscale Orlando condos.

Only 2,100 Orlando apartments will be built this year, that’s 12 percent fewer than last year. The new Orlando apartments are projected to reduce vacancies to only 6 percent and increase rents by at least 3 percent.

Contributing to the bleakness of these numbers is the fact that one of Orlando’s biggest condo conversions ever is currently underway, as the 100 acre, 1,088 unit Park Central apartment complex is converted into luxury Orlando condos.
